Summary 

Operate the controls on the screed which is attached to the paver vehicle to control the quantity and consistency of asphalt that is deposited; estimate overall quantity for the project as well as the quantity needed to achieve the correct grade in the finished surface.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Communicate with asphalt paving operator on the flow of paving machine
  • Maintain the pace and continuity of the paving job
  • Ability to discuss and plan daily project paving procedures/goals with fellow paving personnel to maximize productivity and workmanship
  • Conduct pre-operational checks on equipment
  • Operate equipment and tools. Training will be provided, as necessary
  • Fuel, lubricate, clean, and maintain equipment
  • Follow construction plans and instructions from supervisors
  • Preparing and cleaning up construction sites
  • Load, unload, and move construction materials around the worksite
  • Ensure work site is organized and free of clutter, rubble, and garbage
  • Shovel asphalt mix into areas inaccessible to paving machines, and compact mix using rakes and hand tampers
  • Operate other heavy equipment and other construction-related duties as assigned, including physical labour
  • Good attitude, common sense, the ability to follow directions, hard work and dependability are extremely important
  • Have strong logical/critical thinking, decision making and problem-solving skills

Job Requirements

  • Minimum 3+ years’ operating a screed
  • Must have a valid class 5 driver’s license
  • Willing to work out of town in remote locations as required
  • Must be physically fit – repetitive bending, lifting, kneeling, walking for long periods of time
  • Punctual and able to work full time, overtime, and occasional weekends
  • Must be able to operate the screed on the paver with proper precision for depth, slope, and grade
  • Working knowledge of screed operation on the asphalt paver making normal adjustments for obtaining proper depth, grade, and finished cross-section of asphalt materials
  • Working in inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt
  • Thorough understanding of all aspects of paving industry prep work, grades, drainage, paving patterns, compaction, and other details related to asphalt paving
  • Timeliness and Pride in your work product are essential for success in this position
